Temporary Pause: Canada’s Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship
This year, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will not be able to sponsor their parents or grandparents to come to Canada permanently. The Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program in Canada has been put on hold until further notice, and no new applications will be accepted or processed for 2025, according to the federal government.
Due to a substantial backlog, Immigration, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will only be reviewing parent and grandparent sponsorship applications for 2025 that were previously filed in 2024. In 2025, the IRCC anticipates processing up to 15,000 applications for parent and grandparent sponsorship.
The brief suspension of new applications is a component of Canada’s larger immigration management plan, which aims to lower immigration targets, especially for the Parent and Grandparent Program.
How to Bring Parents and Grandparents to Canada
Even if the sponsorship program is on pause, there are still various immigration routes available in Canada for people who wish to bring their loved ones here:
Super Visa
The Super Visa can be renewed after the designated expiration date and permits parents and grandparents to remain in Canada for a maximum of five years at a time. If you want your family to stay for a long time, this is a fantastic substitute. Both the principal applicant and the sponsor must fulfil specific requirements in order to apply for a Super Visa.
Applicants for a Super Visa are not permitted to work or study in Canada, and they are required to depart the country after their visa expires, in contrast to the parent and grandparent sponsorship scheme. However, if they match the requirements, applicants can request for a new Super Visa once their current one expires.
Visitor Visa/Temporary Resident Visa
Parents or grandparents may remain in Canada for a maximum of six months with a visitor visa, sometimes referred to as a temporary residence visa. After their visa expires, the applicant can be qualified to seek for an extension.
Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)
Family members with specific skills or qualifications can apply for the Provincial Nominee Programs or Express Entry system, which are for people who can prove they have the resources and qualifications to support the Canadian economy and fill job shortages in particular industries or regions.
There are still methods to bring family members to Canada, whether temporarily with a potential extension or through other immigration channels, even though many people may find the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program’s temporary stop to be inconvenient and unpleasant.
