Child or Other Dependant Sponsorship

The family sponsorship program helps reunite families by allowing Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are the parents of a child abroad to apply to sponsor their child, or other dependent, for Canadian permanent residence.

Definition of a Dependent Child

Children must fit the criteria for being considered dependent in order to be eligible for sponsorship. A kid under the age of 22 who is not married or in a common-law relationship is regarded as a dependent, regardless of whether they are the biological or adoptive child of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. If a child over 22 has a medical or mental illness that makes it impossible for them to support themselves, they will be deemed dependent.

Dependent Child Sponsorship Requirements

For the child to be awarded permanent residency, the sponsor and the sponsored individual must both fulfil eligibility conditions, just like in all other family sponsorship streams. In order to sponsor their child, parents need to:

·       Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident living in Canada

·       Be at least 18 years of age

·       Not be in prison, charged with a serious offense, or bankrupt

Additionally, parents will need to present documentation of their relationship with the child, such as a birth or adoption certificate. Before the adoption is finalised, parents who are nearing the completion of the adoption procedure may sponsor the adopted kid. The sponsored individual must be the sponsor’s or sponsor’s spouse’s biological kid, their adopted child, or both, in addition to fulfilling the requirements for a dependent child.

Sponsoring a Dependent Child in Quebec

The Canadian sponsor must make a financial commitment to support the family member they are sponsoring if they live in the province of Quebec. The nature of the relationship determines how long the project will take. The sponsor must promise to provide for the dependent kid for ten years, or until the child is eighteen, whichever comes first, if the dependent child is younger than sixteen. The sponsor is required to provide the dependent child with financial assistance for three years, or until the child turns 25, whichever comes first, if the dependent child is sixteen years of age or older.

Dependent Child Sponsorship Minimum Necessary Income

As long as the dependent child has no children of their own, Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are supporting the dependent children are exempt from meeting the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI). The sponsor must meet the MNI needed for their family unit size if the dependent kid they are sponsoring has dependent children of their own.
